Get ready for a taste of the Caribbean at one of the nation’s busiest travel hubs! Golden Krust, the beloved Black-owned Caribbean fast-casual restaurant, has officially landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). This exciting expansion means travelers from all over the globe can now experience the vibrant flavors of Jamaica right as they pass through Terminal 8.
A Legacy of Flavor and Community
The story of Golden Krust is a true testament to family, hard work, and a passion for authentic Caribbean cuisine. Founded by Lowell Hawthorne, the business traces its roots back to his parents, Mavis and Ephraim, who ran Hawthorne & Sons Bakery in St. Mary, Jamaica, for over five decades. Their bakery wasn’t just about food; it was a community pillar, known for feeding the hungry and supporting local education.
In 1989, Lowell and his siblings, along with their spouses, brought this legacy to the United States. Pooling their savings, they opened the first Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery in The Bronx, New York. This move marked the beginning of a remarkable journey, with Lowell leading the company as president and CEO until his passing in 2017.
Making History and Giving Back
Golden Krust didn’t just enter the market; it made history. In 1996, it became the first Caribbean-owned franchiser in the U.S. Fast forward over three decades, and the company boasts more than 100 restaurants nationwide. But their success isn’t just measured in locations; it’s also in their commitment to giving back.
Through their “35 Deeds” initiative, launched in 2024 to celebrate their 35th anniversary, Golden Krust has donated over 20,000 meals and nearly 7 tons of food to various nonprofits. This spirit of generosity continues to be a core part of their identity as they expand, with recent openings including a location in Miramar, Florida.
A New Gateway at JFK
The new JFK Airport location, spearheaded by franchisees Conroy and Samantha Champagne, is set to open its doors on Friday, October 24th, at Terminal 8. The grand opening celebration, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m., promises a festive atmosphere filled with Jamaican music, art, and, of course, incredible food.
Jacqueline Hawthorne-Robinson, Golden Krust CEO and daughter of the founders, expressed her excitement, stating, “JFK is very diverse, with travelers from all over the world, so I think this will be one of our greatest stepping stones to introducing Golden Krust to new audiences.” Visitors can look forward to classic dishes like braised oxtail, jerk chicken, curried goat, and their famous Jamaican patties, alongside delicious sides.
