Ex-Officer Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Co-worker’s Paycheck

In a shocking turn of events, a former officer at the DeKalb County Jail has been arrested and charged with allegedly stealing a co-worker’s paycheck. Shalanda Williams, 47, is accused of exploiting her position to divert payroll funds into her own bank account, leading to a criminal investigation and her subsequent termination.

The Payroll Scheme Uncovered

The alleged scheme came to light on October 2nd when a staff member at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office realized their paycheck was missing. Investigators discovered that the victim’s employer account had been accessed without authorization. Authorities believe Williams used her credentials as a detention officer to manipulate the county’s payroll system, manually changing the routing information to send funds directly to her personal account.

This alleged misuse of access highlights a serious breach of trust and security within the system. Williams was taken into custody on November 20th and was fired from her position on the same day.

Charges and Denial

Williams now faces a total of seven charges related to the incident. These include felony Theft by Taking, Computer Theft, Identity Fraud using another’s information, Computer Invasion of Privacy, Computer Forgery, Computer Trespass, and Violation of Oath by a Public Officer. She has since been released on bond.

When questioned by WSB-TV, Williams denied any involvement in the missing funds, stating, “No, I didn’t, but I need to talk to my lawyer.” Her legal team will likely be reviewing the evidence as she prepares to appear in DeKalb County Superior Court later this month for a hearing on bail conditions and a preliminary hearing date.

Preventing Future Fraud

In response to the alleged crime, the sheriff’s office is reportedly conducting a thorough review of its internal payroll access procedures. Measures are being put in place to strengthen controls and prevent similar fraudulent activities from occurring in the future. This incident underscores the importance of robust security protocols in managing sensitive financial data.
