On the latest episode of ‘Listen To Black Women,’ co-hosts Lore’l and Jessie Woo dive deep into crucial health topics with OB-GYN Dr. Nicole Sparks and cosmetic dentist Dr. Jarrett Manning. This candid conversation tackles everything from finding the right doctor to the risks of DIY dental procedures and the invaluable support of birth doulas.
Finding the Right Doctor: It’s Not a Lifelong Commitment
The roundtable kicked off with practical advice on navigating the healthcare system. Dr. Nicole emphasizes that finding a good doctor often involves trial and error. “You are not married to your doctor,” she states firmly. “If you don’t like your doctor, go find another one. You’re not stuck.”
Both doctors agree that the patient-doctor relationship should feel like a connection, similar to dating. “It’s like an interview process,” Dr. Jarrett explains. “I want you to come into my office, let’s sit down and see if we are connected. Just like dating—are we going on a second date? Let’s see if I can meet your needs.”
The Dangers of DIY Veneers
The conversation then shifted to the alarming trend of DIY veneers. Lore’l noted the surge in popularity, questioning if they were still considered a last resort. Dr. Jarrett strongly advises against seeking dental work from unlicensed individuals, warning of serious risks like infections and nerve damage. “Do your due diligence and vet the dentist—notice I said dentist, because this stuff out of basements and garages, we can’t do that.”
He stresses the extensive training required for dental professionals: “We go to school for a very long time to learn our craft. This is not something you learn overnight.” The potential cost savings of DIY procedures are simply not worth the severe health risks involved.
The Essential Role of Doulas in Childbirth
The discussion highlighted the growing importance of doula services for expectant mothers. Dr. Nicole enthusiastically supports doulas, explaining how they work collaboratively with OB-GYNs to provide comprehensive care. “I think it’s great to have a doula,” she says. “A lot of the patients that we deliver have their doulas right there. We work in conjunction with each other.”
Given the alarming statistics on maternal mortality among Black women in the U.S., having extra support during pregnancy and childbirth is crucial. “We know the stats with pregnancy in the U.S., especially when it comes to Black women,” Dr. Nicole shares. “It’s very scary… And so, again, it comes down to really trusting your doctor… You want to make sure that whoever you’re with is truly listening to you and taking your concerns seriously.”
Empowering Patients Through Self-Advocacy
The overarching theme of the episode is self-advocacy in healthcare. The experts encourage Black women to research their providers, voice their concerns, and trust their intuition. Whether it’s choosing a doctor, deciding on a dental procedure, or enlisting the support of a doula, being an informed and assertive patient is key to ensuring quality care.
