Shaquille O’Neal & Son Shareef Team Up at Shaq Brand

It’s a true family affair at the Shaq Brand! Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal is bringing his son, Shareef O’Neal, into the fold, and it sounds like Shareef is already making a significant impact. Shaq himself revealed that many of the newer shoe designs are a result of his son’s creative vision, signaling a new era for the iconic brand.

From Reebok to Walmart: Shaq’s Entrepreneurial Journey

Shaq’s entrepreneurial spirit dates back to his early days. Back in 1998, he famously turned down a multi-million dollar shoe deal with Reebok. Why? A powerful encounter with a mother who told him her kids couldn’t afford his expensive Reebok shoes. This moment deeply resonated with Shaq, especially when his own mother reminded him of his humble beginnings in Newark, NJ, where shoes rarely cost more than $40.

This realization led Shaq to launch his own affordable shoe line, partnering with Walmart, which offered unparalleled distribution. He recalls on “The Big Podcast,” “I said to myself, ‘All right, I’m gonna start my own line.’… I had like $50 million on the table. I had no idea what I was going to do. So, I was thinking about where do my people go. Walmart. Walmart is the best distribution in the world.”

Shareef O’Neal Steps Up

Fast forward to today, and the Shaq Brand has achieved incredible success, selling an astonishing 470 million pairs of shoes. Now, Shaq is passing the creative torch to his son, Shareef. “My son is taking over now… my sh-t was kinda old,” Shaq admitted, proudly pointing out that “a lot of these are his designs.”

Guest co-host Bill Bellamy echoed this sentiment, noting that Shareef’s creative input is “going to touch a whole new demographic.” This collaboration signifies a fresh direction for the brand, blending Shaq’s legacy with Shareef’s modern design sensibilities.

A Return to Reebok

Interestingly, while Shaq is expanding his own brand with his son, he also made a significant return to Reebok. In 2023, he rejoined the company that he once left, taking on the role of President of Basketball. This move highlights his enduring connection to the athletic footwear industry, as Reebok’s sales have seen substantial growth, reaching $5 billion in 2024.

The partnership between Shaquille and Shareef O’Neal at the Shaq Brand is more than just a business venture; it’s a testament to family legacy and evolving entrepreneurship. It’s inspiring to see how Shaq’s initial commitment to affordability and accessibility is now being infused with new creative energy.
