Get ready for some major shifts in the tech investment world! SoftBank, the Japanese investment giant, has just announced a massive move: they’re selling their entire $5.8 billion stake in chipmaker Nvidia. Why? To fuel a colossal $22.5 billion investment in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. This strategic pivot signals a strong commitment to the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence.
Asset Monetization for Future Growth
The news broke on November 11, 2025, with SoftBank confirming the sale of 32.1 million Nvidia shares in October. Alongside this, they also offloaded a portion of their T-Mobile holdings, which brought in an additional $9.17 billion. According to Chief Financial Officer Yoshimitsu Goto, these sales are part of a deliberate “asset monetization” strategy.
Goto explained during an investor presentation that the goal is to “provide a lot of investment opportunities for investors, while we can still maintain financial strength.” This approach ensures SoftBank remains financially robust while pursuing ambitious new ventures. As part of this strategy, the company also announced a four-for-one stock split, aiming to make its shares more accessible.
Fueling the AI Revolution
Sources indicate that the cash generated from these sales, combined with a margin loan on its Arm holdings, is earmarked for the substantial OpenAI investment. This isn’t just about OpenAI; the funds are also intended for other key projects, including the acquisition of ABB’s robotics unit. It’s clear SoftBank is betting big on the future of AI and automation.
This significant investment in OpenAI will boost SoftBank’s stake from 4% to an impressive 11%. While they generally avoid exceeding a 40% stake to maintain a non-controlling position, the potential for further increases exists based on OpenAI’s future performance. Goto emphasized the dynamic nature of the stock market and the company’s desire to offer diverse investment opportunities.
Continued Involvement in AI Ventures
Despite selling its Nvidia stake, which reportedly caused a 2% dip in Nvidia’s share value, SoftBank isn’t exiting the AI ecosystem. They remain actively involved in several AI ventures that rely on Nvidia’s technology, including the massive $500 billion U.S. Stargate data center project. This suggests the move is less about caution and more about strategic capital allocation.
This should not be seen, in our view, as a cautious or negative stance on Nvidia, but rather in the context of SoftBank needing at least $30.5bn of capital for investments in the Oct-Dec quarter, including $22.5bn for OpenAI and $6.5bn for Ampere. — Rolf Bulk, New Street Research Analyst
The sheer scale of SoftBank’s planned investments this quarter is unprecedented, reportedly exceeding their aggregate investments over the previous two years combined. This bold strategy underscores their belief in the transformative power of artificial intelligence and their ambition to be at the forefront of this technological revolution.
