Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Christy’ Underperforms at Box Office

It’s been a tough week for ‘Euphoria’ star Sydney Sweeney. Her latest project, the sports biopic ‘Christy,’ which tells the inspiring story of pioneering boxer Christy Martin, had a significantly weaker-than-expected opening weekend at the box office.

Disappointing Box Office Numbers

The film, released across more than 2,000 screens, managed to pull in only $1.3 million in its debut. According to Box Office Mojo, this performance places ‘Christy’ among the lowest-grossing wide releases of its scale, ranking No. 12 overall and No. 9 if you exclude re-releases. Oof.

Following the news of the film’s disappointing sales, Sweeney took to Instagram to share her thoughts and defend the project. She posted behind-the-scenes photos and expressed her deep pride in the movie and in portraying such a strong, resilient figure like Christy Martin.

Art for Impact, Not Just Numbers

Sweeney emphasized that the team behind ‘Christy’ was driven by a mission beyond just commercial success. “We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives,” she wrote.

She added that if the film inspired even one woman to seek safety, then they would consider it a success. “We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact,” Sweeney stated, highlighting the film’s intended message and purpose.

The Story of Christy Martin

Christy Martin’s life story is undeniably powerful. She was the first female fighter promoted by the legendary Don King and the first to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated. Martin held the World Boxing Council super welterweight title in 2009 and was rightfully inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020.

Her personal life was tragically marked by an attack in 2010, when she was stabbed and shot by her husband and trainer of 19 years, James Martin, who was played by Ben Foster in the film. He was later convicted of attempted second-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years.

This box office news comes shortly after reports surfaced that Sweeney’s ‘Euphoria’ co-star, Zendaya, is reportedly refusing to participate in promotional activities for the upcoming season alongside Sweeney due to differing political views. It seems Sweeney is facing challenges both professionally and personally.
