Long before MacKenzie Scott became a household name for her record-breaking philanthropic efforts, she was a student learning invaluable lessons from the legendary author Toni Morrison. Their connection, forged in creative writing classes at Princeton University, has profoundly shaped Scott’s approach to giving, including her significant contributions to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Lessons in Compassion and Craft
Morrison, a Nobel Prize winner, wasn’t just teaching writing techniques; she was instilling a deep sense of empathy and understanding of human struggles. This mentorship profoundly influenced Scott, guiding her perspective as she later navigated immense wealth following her 2019 divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Scott has since dedicated billions to causes supporting Black healthcare, education, food banks, and housing.
Their bond was so significant that Scott’s correspondence with Morrison, including a letter from 1992 detailing her financial struggles while waitressing, is preserved in Princeton’s Firestone Library. Morrison herself recognized Scott’s talent, calling her “one of the best students I’ve ever had in my creative-writing classes.”
A Transformative Recommendation and a Giving Pledge
Morrison’s influence extended even to Scott’s career path. In 1992, a phone transcript of Morrison’s recommendation played a role in Scott being hired at the hedge fund D. E. Shaw, a pivotal moment that set her on a path toward immense financial success. This experience likely underscored the power of mentorship and opportunity.
By May 2019, Scott had formally committed her fortune to philanthropy by signing the Giving Pledge. In her letter, she emphasized the immediate and far-reaching impact of giving, stating, “I have no doubt that tremendous value comes when people act quickly on the impulse to give.”
No drive has more positive ripple effects than the desire to be of service. There are lots of resources each of us can pull from our safes to share with others — time, attention, knowledge, patience, creativity, talent, effort, humor, compassion. — MacKenzie Scott
A Legacy of Generosity
Toni Morrison passed away in August 2019, leaving behind a legacy of masterful literature and deep empathy. That legacy clearly lives on through MacKenzie Scott’s actions. As of November 2025, Scott has donated over an astonishing $19.25 billion, demonstrating a commitment to lifting others up that mirrors the values instilled by her former mentor.
Scott herself has defined philanthropy not by the amount of money exchanged, but by intention and effort. Her continued generosity, particularly the $1.07 billion directed towards HBCUs, underscores her dedication to creating positive change and fostering opportunity within the Black community, a mission deeply influenced by the wisdom of Toni Morrison.
