Meek Mill, a prominent voice in hip-hop and a vocal advocate for justice reform, is speaking out, claiming he’s being unfairly targeted by law enforcement. Despite reportedly holding firearm licenses in over 40 states, the rapper detailed a recent encounter where he felt harassed by police.
A Frustrating Encounter in NYC
In a series of tweets, Meek Mill described being pulled from his car and handcuffed in front of a club in New York City. He expressed his shock and embarrassment, stating, “They had guns in my face for no reason smh I thought it was a prank.” He questioned the necessity of such actions, especially given his legal firearm permits.
According to reports, police stopped three men around 4 a.m. following a gun report. However, no weapon was found, and all individuals were subsequently released. Meek Mill’s frustration stems from what he perceives as unwarranted police attention, even when he is legally armed or with individuals who are licensed to carry.
From Incarceration to Advocacy
This situation is particularly poignant given Meek Mill’s own history. Once incarcerated on gun and drug charges, he has since become a leading figure in the fight for justice reform. He co-founded the REFORM Alliance with Jay-Z and others, working to improve the legal system.
He has actively supported legislative changes, like the probation reform laws in Pennsylvania, emphasizing his journey to rebuild his life and earn respect. His current claims suggest that despite his efforts and legal standing, he still faces scrutiny that he believes is unwarranted and disruptive.
Meek Mill’s experience raises important questions about profiling and the challenges faced by individuals with past records, even after significant rehabilitation and legal compliance. He concluded his thoughts with a stark statement: “They tryna get me.”
