Get ready to be amazed! Even though fashion week has wrapped up, airbrush artist Mab is still pushing the boundaries of couture. Recently, she hosted her very first exhibition, aptly titled “Aerosol Couture,” and it was a spectacular celebration of Black beauty and fashion.
A “Hood Beauty” Vision Comes to Life
This incredible event took place at By Alexander, a brand-new Black-owned concept store in New York City. Mab brought her unique vision of “hood beauty” to Greene Street, transforming the space into a canvas for her art. It’s all about celebrating Black bodies and creativity in a bold new way.
Mab, known for her stunning airbrush work – like adding abs to models at Theophilio’s SS26 show – poured her heart into this exhibition. She even drove four hours from her hometown on Halloween night, only to get a call to airbrush a singer into a white swan for Heidi Klum’s famous party! Talk about dedication.
Where Fashion Meets the Skin
Imagine this: models adorned with airbrushed outfits, like a red turtleneck or daring “coochie cutters,” painted directly onto their skin. Mab uses high-quality products like Mehron Makeup and MAC Pro Acrylic Paint to achieve that “skin-tight” look, making fashion feel more literal than ever.
The exhibition wasn’t just about static art; it was a full sensory experience. One model revved a blue motorcycle, filling the room with smoke, while a dancer covered in silver body paint mesmerized the crowd. The guest list was just as impressive, featuring notable figures like photographer Myles Loftin and designer Taofeek Abijako.
The Vulnerability and Confidence of Art
Mab emphasizes the vulnerability and confidence required for models to be painted while nearly nude. “You have to love yourself to be up there,” she shared. It’s a powerful statement about self-love and body positivity, central to her artistic message.
The Future of Aerosol Couture
For the past six years, Mab has been dedicated to finding and showcasing beauty in Black bodies through her airbrush art. Her ambition doesn’t stop here; she dreams of taking her talents to iconic venues like Magic City in Atlanta. “Community is what I look for everywhere,” she says, highlighting her commitment to connection.
