In the world of education, ensuring students have access to quality learning materials is paramount. However, a New York City principal is now at the center of an investigation for allegedly using school funds in a way that has raised serious questions. Aneesha Jacko, the principal at PS 35 Nathaniel Woodhull in Queens, is reportedly being looked into for purchasing hundreds of books written by her friends.
Questions Surround Book Purchases
The investigation, confirmed by Jason Brooks, a spokesperson for the Special Commissioner of Investigation, has been ongoing for about three years. Sources revealed that Jacko allegedly bought approximately 500 copies of the paperback ‘Dusko Goes to Sea.’ This book was written by Raquel Horn, the wife of hip-hop mogul Damon Dash. The book, which retails for $14.95, isn’t the only one from Horn that the school purchased; ‘Dusko Goes to Space’ was also bought three years prior.
Damon Dash himself weighed in when contacted by the New York Post, questioning the scrutiny. ‘There’s a budget for them to buy books. So why is it a problem?’ he asked. Dash suggested the investigation might be racially motivated, adding, ‘I think it’s a racist thing that she’s even being looked at and scrutinized… She’s trying to help these kids learn how to read.’
Beyond Books: Other Expenditures Under Review
The scrutiny doesn’t stop at the book purchases. Records reviewed by The Post indicate that Jacko also authorized a $10,000 payment to Poppington LLC, Damon Dash’s apparel company, back in March 2022, for T-shirts. Additionally, a payment of $26,877 was made to Young Faces Smiling, a non-profit organization founded by her friend A. McClarty.
Further adding to the list of questioned expenses, Jacko reportedly bought about 100 copies of her own book, ‘Reaching for the Stars: 10 Secret Steps to Connecting with Celebrities and Building Your Brand.’ The school also purchased a significant number of books from another friend, Brianna Greenspan, including over 1,000 copies of various titles, and spent $61,000 on Sussman Education Inc., the publisher of those books.
No Criminal Wrongdoing Accused (Yet)
It’s important to note that officials have stated that Aneesha Jacko is not currently accused of any criminal wrongdoing. The investigation is focused on exploring the complaints regarding her spending. This situation raises important questions about oversight and accountability in school budgeting and procurement processes.
