In the wake of the tragic news of D’Angelo’s passing, fellow music legend Lauryn Hill has shared a profoundly moving tribute, celebrating his artistry and profound impact. Hill took to Instagram to express her grief and admiration for the “genius” musician, whom she described as a “beacon of light.”
A Tribute to Genius and Light
Hill’s heartfelt caption reflected on D’Angelo’s unique presence, stating, “Your undeniable beauty and talent were not of this world, and a presence not of this world needs protection in a world that covets light and the anointing of God.” She acknowledged his power to inspire and move people, noting, “You sir, moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius.”
She expressed regret for not having more time with him, emphasizing his role in paving the way for future generations. “Thank you for charting the course and for making space during a time when no similar space really existed,” Hill wrote, highlighting his significance in creating a legacy for Black artists when such platforms were scarce.
Celebrating Strength, Sensitivity, and Peace
Hill particularly praised D’Angelo for embodying a powerful combination of strength and sensitivity in Black manhood, offering a nuanced portrayal that resonated deeply. “You imaged a unity of strength and sensitivity in Black manhood to a generation that only saw itself as having to be one or the other,” she wrote. Her prayer was for his peace, free from the world’s negativity: “Far from possessiveness, far from greed, far from manipulation, far from exploitation… may God grant peace and shelter to your family, true friends and genuine appreciators.”
D’Angelo tragically passed away on October 14th after a private battle with pancreatic cancer. His family confirmed the news, expressing their heartbreak but also their gratitude for the “extraordinarily moving music” he left behind. The magnitude of his loss has been felt across the music industry, with tributes pouring in from artists like Jamie Foxx, Tyler, The Creator, H.E.R., Maxwell, and Jill Scott.
