Is Flirting Cheating? Rethinking Relationship Boundaries

Remember when cheating was pretty black and white? Well, it seems the lines are getting blurrier than ever! In today’s world, what one person considers a harmless interaction, another might see as a major breach of trust. We’re talking about things like casual flirting, checking out an ex on social media, or even watching adult content.

Redefining Infidelity: What’s the New ‘Cheating’?

A recent study by Talker Research, in partnership with LELO, surveyed 2,000 sexually active adults and the results are pretty eye-opening. It turns out, a significant portion of people are rethinking what infidelity actually means in a relationship. For many, the definition has expanded beyond the traditional physical or emotional affair.

Get this: 51% of respondents believe that harmless flirting can seriously damage a relationship, and a whopping 60% feel the same way about chatting with an ex-partner. Even more surprisingly, 23% consider watching pornography a form of cheating. For over half of those who feel this way (54%), it’s a strict no-go once a relationship gets serious.

Navigating Past Partners and Workplace Friendships

Our pasts can be a sensitive subject, and it seems that extends to our partners’ pasts too. Nearly half of those surveyed (49%) admitted they’d confront their partner if they found pictures of an ex on their phone or social media. That number jumps to 62% if there are actual text messages involved. Ouch!

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. About a third of people (30%) are actually okay with their partner being friends with an ex, though they’d definitely be keeping a close eye on things. Similarly, 36% would notice a close bond between their partner and a coworker but wouldn’t necessarily make a fuss unless something seemed truly suspicious.

What Doesn’t Trigger Jealousy (Usually)

  • Dancing with someone else (32%)
  • Allowing someone to buy you a drink (31%)
  • Reading erotica (47%)

Interestingly, some actions that might seem like potential red flags to some are considered less threatening by others. Things like dancing with someone else, accepting a drink from another person, or even reading erotica don’t seem to spark jealousy as easily for a majority of respondents.

The Fear of Honesty

Here’s a statistic that might surprise you: a massive 89% of people admitted they hesitate to be completely honest with their partner if something is bothering them. Why? One in seven confessed they avoid addressing issues just to prevent upsetting their partner. It seems the fear of conflict is a powerful force in relationships.

This fear of upsetting their partner leads over half of respondents (53%) to admit they sometimes withhold their true feelings or aren’t entirely honest during intimacy. Concerns about causing distress (39%) or fearing their partner’s reaction (33%) are the main drivers behind this lack of open communication.

What’s Considered ‘Fair Game’?

On the flip side, the study did highlight some activities that are generally considered acceptable and not immediate signs of cheating. A vast majority (79%) feel that reading erotica is fine, and 76% agree that using sex toys or masturbating are not indicators of infidelity. Even dancing with someone else is deemed okay by 66% of those surveyed.

“Whether single, in a relationship, or somewhere in between, exploring together requires openness and mutual respect. Honest conversations about desires and limits unlock new experiences, helping partners build deeper trust and connection.” — Luka Matutinovic, Chief Marketing Officer at LELO

Ultimately, Luka Matutinovic, chief marketing officer at LELO, emphasizes the importance of setting personal boundaries within a relationship. He suggests that open and honest conversations about desires and limits are crucial for building trust and fostering deeper intimacy. When judgment is set aside, partners can feel empowered to explore and grow together.
