Spelman Seven: 7 Grads Achieve Perfect 4.0 GPA

Talk about making history! Spelman College is celebrating an extraordinary achievement as seven seniors are set to graduate with perfect 4.0 GPAs. This incredible group, collectively known as the ‘Spelman Seven,’ represents the largest number of valedictorians in the school’s storied history.

The seven scholars – Sophia Davis, Mariama Diallo, Nia-Sarai Perry, Alyssa Richardson, Aiyana Ringo, Alexis Sims, and Cori’Anna White – entered Spelman together in 2022 and have maintained identical perfect GPAs throughout their rigorous undergraduate careers. Their accomplishment is drawing attention not just for its academic brilliance, but for the powerful message of collaboration and support it sends.

Sisterhood Over Competition

Instead of a cutthroat academic environment, these women describe their journey as one built on community and mutual encouragement. They emphasized how crucial their sisterhood was in helping them maintain their perfect grades, especially when facing demanding coursework and personal challenges.

A powerful example of this support system comes from Nia-Sarai Perry, a philosophy major. When she received an A-minus in a course that threatened her 4.0, fellow philosophy major Alexis Sims encouraged her to retake the class. This decision allowed them to continue pursuing this academic distinction together, highlighting their commitment to collective success.

Overcoming Personal Hurdles

The academic excellence of the Spelman Seven is even more remarkable considering the significant obstacles they navigated outside the classroom. Nia-Sarai Perry balanced her studies while supporting her mother, a breast cancer survivor.

Alexis Sims persevered through a concussion and a broken foot during her sophomore year, while biochemistry major Alyssa Richardson juggled a demanding science curriculum with her involvement in the Spelman College Glee Club. Their dedication shines through their ability to maintain perfect academic records amidst these challenges.

Diverse Futures, Shared Success

These seven graduates represent a wide array of academic passions and future career aspirations. Alyssa Richardson is heading to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, while Cori’Anna White will attend Columbia Law School, having also served as Spelman’s student government association president.

Aiyana Ringo and Alexis Sims are pursuing careers in civil rights and international law, respectively. Mariama Diallo plans to continue her work in filmmaking and community initiatives in Brooklyn, and Sophia Davis, inspired by Zora Neale Hurston, aims to focus on music, storytelling, and Black cultural research.

A Symbol of Resilience and Value

The achievement of the Spelman Seven carries profound cultural significance, especially during a time when diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, particularly within Black-centered institutions, face scrutiny. “At a time where we are under attack in a myriad of ways, to have seven Black women stand together in this accomplishment means something,” stated Cori’Anna White.

White also reflected on the number seven as a biblical symbol of completion. Their success underscores not only academic excellence but also the invaluable role of support systems and community within the unique culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
