It’s never easy when financial trust is broken, especially when it involves a well-known establishment. News has emerged that the former Chief Financial Officer for Pinky Cole’s now-closed restaurant, Bar Vegan, has been indicted on serious charges. This situation brings a new layer of complexity to the history of the Atlanta-based eatery.
The Charges Against Aaron Mattison
Aaron Mattison, who managed Bar Vegan’s finances between 2021 and 2022, is facing multiple criminal charges in Georgia. These include theft by taking, first-degree forgery, and money laundering. Court documents reveal accusations of orchestrating several unauthorized financial transactions for his personal benefit.
Prosecutors allege that Mattison created fraudulent financial documents, making them appear approved by Bar Vegan. He then reportedly initiated an $87,000 wire transfer, using the funds for his own purposes. This wasn’t an isolated incident; he’s also accused of making repeated withdrawals of $600, totaling over $24,999, between September 2021 and June 2022.
A Scheme of Money Laundering?
The alleged scheme didn’t stop at unauthorized withdrawals. Mattison is also accused of transferring these funds across various bank accounts, suggesting a deliberate attempt at money laundering. These serious allegations paint a picture of financial misconduct during his tenure.
Past Legal Troubles for Bar Vegan
This isn’t the first time Bar Vegan has been in the legal spotlight. It’s worth remembering that over four years ago, a former employee filed a lawsuit concerning unpaid wages. This lawsuit, filed in July 2022, named Pinky Cole, Aaron Mattison, and another co-owner as defendants.
The accusations back then involved withholding tips and overtime, and failing to meet federal minimum wage requirements. While initially denied, the parties eventually agreed to a settlement of $62,172 to resolve the alleged damages. At the time, Cole’s representative clarified that while she was named, she had no personal ownership in Bar Vegan LLC, which was owned by Slutty Vegan Inc.
Pinky Cole’s Current Status
It’s important to note that Pinky Cole herself has not been charged in connection with Aaron Mattison’s recent indictment. Her role as CEO of Slutty Vegan and her stated lack of direct ownership in Bar Vegan were highlighted during the previous legal proceedings. This new indictment focuses solely on the actions of the former CFO.
