Comedian Kevin Fredericks, widely known as KevOnStage, has found himself at the heart of a social media debate following his recent appearance on Cam Newton’s podcast. During the discussion, KevOnStage shared his perspective on LGBTQ+ inclusion within Christianity, drawing both praise and criticism from various online communities.
A Christian Perspective on Love and Inclusion
When asked about his views on Christianity and his representation of it, KevOnStage emphasized his identity as a “church kid” rather than a pastor or teacher. He stated, “I’ve been pretty vocal about loving LGBT people, and that just doesn’t go over well with a lot of church people.” His approach is rooted in his interpretation of Jesus’s teachings, highlighting his time spent with “sinners and the publicans and the tax collectors” – society’s outcasts.
“I think a lot of times, you know, we want to be—we being Christians—we want to be the chastisers and then the correctors of people. I don’t choose that path. I choose love over and over,” he explained, advocating for a path of love rather than judgment.
Contrasting Experiences Within the Church
Drawing from his own experiences, KevOnStage shared poignant anecdotes about his church upbringing. He recalled how his brother, who had children out of wedlock and engaged in premarital sex, was embraced by the congregation, transforming from a passive to an active member. However, he contrasted this with the church’s less welcoming attitude towards LGBTQ+ individuals.
He recounted stories of a “masculine presenting” girl who was gradually marginalized within the church, eventually leaving because she wasn’t met with the same level of love. He also shared the experience of an openly gay young man who was confronted by a deacon and asked why he was even present, given his identity. KevOnStage posted clips of this conversation on social media, acknowledging the potential backlash and stating, “If you want to know why I am the way I am about LGBT peeps, this is the reason.”
Reactions and Evolving Faith
KevOnStage’s words quickly generated mixed reactions online. While some Christians applauded his perspective on love and acceptance, others criticized his stance, viewing it as a departure from biblical teachings. One critic argued, “real love calls people into truth and truth does not bend.”
In response to the discourse, KevOnStage reiterated his approach: “I don’t correct nobody on nothing… gay, straight sex. I don’t deal with it. I don’t be so sure about stuff that I used to be so sure about.” He emphasized that his faith journey is evolving, encouraging others to build their own relationship with God rather than relying on his word as definitive truth. His ongoing approach is to “let my light shine” and inspire others through his actions and open discussions.
