Imagine being in federal prison and having to navigate relationships with some of the most infamous figures. Jen Shah, the former star of ‘The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,’ recently opened up about her time behind bars, revealing who she intentionally avoided and who she befriended.
Keeping a Distance from Ghislaine Maxwell
Shah, who was released from federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas, in December 2025 and is now under home confinement, told PEOPLE that Ghislaine Maxwell was one inmate she made a point to steer clear of. “I chose to keep my distance,” Shah stated, noting that her interactions with Maxwell were minimal.
While Maxwell’s notoriety might seem like the obvious reason for avoidance, Shah explained it was more about Maxwell’s alleged lack of remorse. Shah mentioned hearing comments from Maxwell that seemed to dismiss the victims connected to Jeffrey Epstein, which deeply bothered her. “I just feel like there should be a level of remorse for the victims,” Shah said.
A Friendship with Elizabeth Holmes
Interestingly, Shah found a kindred spirit in another high-profile inmate: Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced Theranos founder. Shah described Holmes, who is also serving time for fraud, as a good friend. “Lizzie and I are good friends,” Shah shared.
The connection between Shah and Holmes, both serving sentences for significant financial crimes, stemmed from their shared experience as high-profile prisoners. “As another high profile prisoner, there are just certain things you’re both dealing with,” Shah explained, suggesting a unique understanding between them.
Allegations of Special Treatment
Beyond personal relationships, Shah also made allegations about Maxwell receiving preferential treatment within the facility. She claimed Maxwell enjoyed perks like private workouts, bottled water, and special meals. However, the Bureau of Prisons refuted these claims, stating that all inmates are treated equally and that any staff member providing special treatment would face disciplinary action.
Shah’s account offers a fascinating glimpse into the complex social dynamics that can exist even within the confines of a correctional facility, highlighting how personal values and shared experiences can shape inmate interactions.
