In the wake of recent controversy surrounding TLC’s Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, fellow music icon Cheryl “Salt” James of Salt-N-Pepa has stepped in to defend her fellow 90s superstar. Chilli found herself under fire following reports of donations to Donald Trump’s campaign and a reposted conspiracy theory about Michelle Obama.
Addressing the Controversy: Donations and Reposts
Reports surfaced, citing FEC records, that a Rozonda Thomas from Georgia donated nearly $1,000 to Trump’s campaign and other Republican committees. Around $800 of this reportedly went directly to Trump’s campaign, with smaller amounts allocated to Senator Ted Cruz and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. This news came shortly after Chilli reposted a debunked article alleging Michelle Obama had registered to vote as a man in 1994.
The repost, though quickly deleted, caused a significant backlash online. Critics were quick to condemn Chilli, especially given the timing, just days after TLC, Salt-N-Pepa, and En Vogue announced their first-ever co-headlining tour.
Chilli’s Defense: Accident and Intentions
Chilli addressed the drama in a video statement to TMZ and a subsequent Instagram post. She vehemently denied being “MAGA” and insisted she has immense respect for Michelle Obama, explaining the repost was an accidental click on a “repost button” while scrolling, noting her limited computer savvy. She stated she would “never say or do anything that is disrespectful to her or to any woman.”
Regarding the political donations, Chilli clarified that any contributions she makes are intended to “help veterans” and “stop human trafficking.” She emphasized her long-standing support for veterans and reiterated her commitment to love, faith, and connection, stating, “I’m just not wired like that. That is—that’s just not who I am.”
Salt’s Unwavering Support
Salt didn’t hesitate to back her fellow artist. Commenting on Chilli’s Instagram post, she wrote, “Y’all it was accident and I believe her, if my own sister made that mistake l’d believe her.” Salt urged Chilli to “keep your pretty head all the way up,” acknowledging how quickly social media can spread negativity.
She added, “This world is very quick to believe anything and everything posted on social media. Quick to crucify and slow to forgive. Even when you straighten it out haters will always hate. We know you and your heart.” Salt reassured Chilli of their support, stating, “We got you and any threat of not coming to the show from anyone will not stop us from loving on you and supporting you as a person and your legacy in music.”
