Dreaming of stretching out on a long flight without shelling out for first class? United Airlines might just have the answer. They’ve unveiled the innovative ‘United Relax Row,’ a new seating configuration designed to bring lie-flat comfort to economy passengers.
From Seats to a Sleeper
The ‘Relax Row’ transforms an entire row of three economy seats into a bed-like experience. Passengers who book this option will find that the adjacent seats feature adjustable leg rests that, when raised, create a seamless, flat surface. To enhance the comfort even further, United will provide a mattress pad, a blanket, and two pillows.
This thoughtful upgrade aims to provide a much-needed boost in comfort for travelers on extended journeys. For younger passengers, United is even including a plush toy to help ensure a restful sleep until landing. It’s a clear move to cater to the growing demand for more premium travel experiences, even in the main cabin.
A Trend Towards Premium Economy
This development comes as United Airlines, like many carriers, is adapting to a shift in passenger demand towards more premium options. The airline is reportedly reducing the number of standard economy seats on some new aircraft to make way for these more profitable, plushier options, such as the Airbus A321neo jets.
United’s chief commercial officer noted strong demand across all cabin classes, but highlighted that premium offerings continue to lead the way. The ‘Relax Row’ is part of this strategy to enhance the overall passenger experience and cater to those willing to pay a bit more for significant comfort improvements.
Pricing and Availability
While the exact cost of the ‘Relax Row’ hasn’t been announced, it’s expected to be more than a standard economy ticket but less than the premium lie-flat seats found in United Polaris. For comparison, Air New Zealand’s similar ‘Sky Couch’ option can cost around $1,000 to $1,200 each way. Importantly, this new seating option won’t be available until 2027, as it will be rolled out on new aircraft.
