The Rock’s ‘Moana’ Wig Goes Viral

Get ready for some serious laughs! Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has sent the internet into a frenzy with the first trailer for Disney’s live-action ‘Moana.’ While fans are excited to see him reprise his role as the demigod Maui, it’s his character’s wig that’s stealing the show and sparking hilarious reactions online.

The ‘People’s Wig’ Takes Center Stage

The newly released trailer features Johnson in full Maui mode, complete with a rather… unique wig unit. Social media users quickly jumped on the visual, unleashing a wave of jokes and ‘hilarious hysteria.’ The wig, described as having ‘real lift,’ was apparently a significant consideration during filming, especially given the water-centric nature of the story.

Director Thomas Kail explained the wig’s specific requirements to Entertainment Weekly, noting the need for it to withstand being wet. “Because you’re doing this on the water, ‘what does it look like wet?’ is a real conversation when you’re making Moana,” Kail shared. He added that the wig could gain up to seven pounds when saturated with water, presenting a unique challenge for the actor.

Challenges of the Role

Johnson himself acknowledged the difficulties of embodying Maui, particularly the prosthetics, hair, and body suit, which added an extra 40 pounds. “The thing that became a challenge, that I had to work through very quickly, that I didn’t anticipate was the prosthetics and the hair and then the body,” he told EW. He described the adjustment needed to convey emotions while wearing the heavy costume.

Joining Johnson in the upcoming film are Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana, John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala. Whether Disney will make any adjustments to Maui’s wig before the film’s release on July 10, 2026, remains to be seen, but it’s already become a memorable talking point.
