Talk about making waves! Courtney Adeleye is rewriting the rules of the beauty industry, achieving a historic milestone by having not one, but two of her haircare brands stocked at major retailers like Walmart. This is a massive win, especially during Women’s History Month, proving that barriers are meant to be broken.
From Nurse to Beauty Mogul
Adeleye’s journey is truly inspiring. She first made a name for herself with The Mane Choice, a natural haircare brand focused on hair growth and retention. Starting from her own home, she infused her products with vitamins and natural ingredients, tapping into a market need. The brand quickly became a leader, surpassing $100 million in sales by 2019.
Her success with The Mane Choice led to a significant acquisition by MAV Beauty Brands for $61.5 million. But Adeleye wasn’t done yet. Her entrepreneurial spirit pushed her to create her next venture, Watch & Sea Beauty. This new brand continues her commitment to natural ingredients, this time blending haircare and skincare with plant- and ocean-based elements.
A Historic Retail Achievement
Now, Watch & Sea Beauty is making its own splash, with its products hitting the shelves at CVS and, notably, Walmart. This means both The Mane Choice (though no longer owned by Adeleye, its success paved the way) and Watch & Sea Beauty are accessible nationwide through the retail giant. Adeleye proudly shared this achievement on social media, highlighting the significance of having two Black-woman-founded brands available through such a major commerce platform.
In a powerful Instagram post, she wrote, “History isn’t just something we read about. We are OUT HERE MAKING IT.” She emphasized that this feat is not only unprecedented for an African-American woman but for any African-American person, marking a truly groundbreaking moment in business history.
Paving the Way for Future Entrepreneurs
With Watch & Sea Beauty also finding distribution at Target and H.E.B., Adeleye is not just building her own empire; she’s demonstrating what’s possible for Black women in the beauty and haircare industries. Her success story is a beacon of inspiration, showing that with innovation, dedication, and a commitment to natural solutions, Black entrepreneurs can indeed build and scale their own successful brands.
