Kanye West Settles ‘Vultures 1’ Sample Lawsuit

Kanye West, often navigating a complex legal landscape, has managed to put one significant lawsuit behind him. The artist, also known as Ye, has reportedly settled a case involving allegations of illegally sampling a song on his 2024 album, ‘Vultures 1’.

The ‘Drink a Yak’ Sample Controversy

The lawsuit was filed by three artists: Criminal Manne (Vanda Watkins), DJ Squeeky (Hayward Ivy), and Kilo G (Robert L. Johnson Jr.). They accused Ye of sampling their track, ‘Drink a Yak (Part 2),’ without proper clearance for the song ‘Fuk Sumn,’ which features Ty Dolla $ign on ‘Vultures 1.’ The plaintiffs’ attorneys stated that numerous attempts to resolve the matter directly had failed, leaving them with no choice but to pursue legal action.

According to Billboard, representatives for the Chicago hitmaker did allegedly reach out to the artists in an attempt to clear the samples legally. However, it seems an agreement was never reached, leading to the lawsuit being filed.

Settlement Reached

Yesterday, March 18th, both parties confirmed that they have “reached a settlement agreement in principle resolving all claims between them.” While the specifics of the settlement have not yet been made public, this resolution marks a significant step in closing this legal chapter for West.

This news comes at an interesting time, just days before Kanye West is anticipated to release his twelfth studio album, ‘BULLY.’ The project has been teased for some time, with billboards in Los Angeles hinting at a March 27, 2026 release date, though previous reports suggested March 20th. Given West’s history, release dates can often be fluid.

Looking Ahead to ‘BULLY’

The upcoming album, ‘BULLY,’ is rumored to explore themes of remorse, memory, ego, faith, and consequence. With this sample dispute settled, West can presumably focus more attention on the rollout and reception of his new project.

Resolving sample clearance issues is a crucial part of the music industry, and this settlement allows Kanye West to move forward while potentially avoiding further complications as he prepares to launch his latest musical endeavor.
