In a major move within the media industry, Paramount is acquiring Tyler Perry’s minority stake in the streaming service BET+. This acquisition signifies a strategic shift, aiming to integrate BET+’s extensive content library into Paramount+’s broader platform.
BET+ Content to Move to Paramount+
Tyler Perry, who launched his first series with BET in 2019, has been a prolific producer for the network and BET+, creating over 700 episodes. His most recent deal, valued in the nine figures and set to conclude in 2028, includes producing new and existing series for both BET and BET+. Perry held an estimated 25% stake in BET+, valued at tens of millions of dollars.
As of June, BET+ will cease to operate as a standalone service. Its library, boasting over 1,000 hours of content including originals, movies, and specials, will be integrated into Paramount+. This move is expected to significantly expand the reach of BET content, potentially introducing it to Paramount+’s subscriber base of over 80 million, a substantial increase from BET+’s estimated 3.5 million subscribers.
Expanding Reach and Supporting Black Culture
A Paramount spokesperson stated, “We share the same ambition to expand the reach of BET content, and Tyler will continue to be a valued and important partner through his overall programming agreement.” The content from Perry’s BET+ library, including series like “Ruthless,” “Divorced Sistas,” and “All the Queen’s Men,” will now live on Paramount+’s BET Hub.
Louis Carr, president of BET, emphasized the strategic importance of this move for Black culture and BET’s role within Paramount’s portfolio. “This powerful next step ensures the stories we champion, the creators we support and the culture we represent go further than ever before… BET is a cornerstone of Black culture and an essential part of Paramount’s portfolio and long‑term content strategy,” Carr stated in an email obtained by Deadline. He further noted BET’s success in reaching audiences through FAST channels and expressed excitement about the potential for growth and ensuring BET’s voice continues to shape culture globally.
Discounted Subscriptions for BET+ Users
Existing BET+ users will reportedly have the option to subscribe to Paramount+ at a discounted rate as the streaming service transitions. This integration is poised to enhance the visibility and accessibility of BET’s culturally significant content.
