Following his appearance on Season 10 of Netflix’s hit reality show ‘Love Is Blind,’ contestant Devonta Anderson is finding himself in the spotlight for reasons beyond his on-screen romance. Footage surfaced suggesting he hadn’t dated women of color, leading to widespread speculation. Now, Anderson is speaking out to clarify his comments and set the record straight.
Setting the Record Straight on the Podcast
During a recent appearance on the “Roxanne and Shantel” podcast, the 32-year-old loan officer addressed a moment captured in a confessional interview. In the clip, shown during the season reunion, Anderson told fellow contestant Brittnay Wicker, who is Black and Latina, that he had never dated a woman of color before. He added that he fell in love with Brittnay for her heart, and that her being a woman of color was a surprise, as he’d never dated, let alone gotten engaged to, someone of color.
Anderson described the situation as a combination of a “misspeaking moment” and comments taken out of context. He explained that the conversation originated in the pods, where he initially said no when asked if he had dated women of color. He then clarified, stating, “Well, actually, I have. I just haven’t gotten into a serious relationship. But I was like, ‘Race doesn’t matter to me.’” He believes the phrase “woman of color comment” originated from the producers’ prompts during his confessional interviews.
Identity and Producer Influence
Anderson, who identifies as part Black and notes that “half” his family is Black, also pointed out that he personally doesn’t often use the broad term “woman of color.” He feels the phrase can be overly general. He explained that he was repeating the phrasing used in the producer’s questions to ensure viewers understood the context of the interview.
“I was like … when do I ever refer to someone as ‘woman of color’?” he questioned. “Half of my family is Black. My grandmother is Black. To see all these false narratives and people posting online like, ‘Oh, he hates Black women,’ this or that — I’m like, it’s absolutely insane.” He asserted that the claims are untrue and that several of his past romantic interests were Black women, including a long-term high school crush.
Beyond the Dating Controversy
This dating discussion isn’t the only headline Anderson has made since ‘Love Is Blind’ Season 10 concluded. He and Brittnay Wicker did not end up marrying, parting ways under unclear circumstances, with Wicker later stating she felt left in the dark about their relationship post-filming. The drama continued when it was revealed he attended a cast trip, and at the reunion, he surprised everyone by announcing he is now engaged and expecting a child with someone else.
Anderson has indicated he plans to share more about his current life updates on his own terms. While the dating comments sparked significant online debate, his personal life has clearly taken several new directions since the show wrapped.
